Peace Monuments Dedicated in 1990
(45 years after Hiroshima & Nagasaki)

January 11, 1990 - "Behold", Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site, Atlanta, Georgia (USA). Depicts Kunta Kinte from the novel Roots by Alex Haley. Kinte is performing a Mandinka ceremony for his first-born, Kizzy: "Behold, the only thing greater than yourself." Sculpted by Patrick Morelli. Dedicated by Coretta Scott King. There are other Alex Haley statues in Annapolis, Maryland, & Knoxville, Tennessee, and Haley homes in Henning & Clinton, Tennessee.


April 1, 1990 - World Peace Bell, Tsurumiryokuchi Expo '90 Commenorative Park, Osaka (Japan). Installed & dedicated during International Garden and Greenery Exposition (also known as Hana-haku, ''Flower Expo'' and Expo '90). Visited by the Emperor & Empress on April 23, 1990. Tsurumiryokuchi Park is the site of Expo '70 where the Japanese Peace Bell from UN Headquarters was displayed in 1970 (qv).

May 29, 1990 - Rauhanturvaajien muistomerkki / Memorial to the Peacekeepers, Hietaniemi graveyard, Helsinki (Finland). "Acknowledges the 45 Finns who died during the first 50 years of peacekeeping missions. The first peacekeeping mission in which Finnish peacekeepers participated took place in Suez, Egypt, in 1956. The Finnish contribution proved to be of high significance. There are three elements to the work of sculptor Matti Peltokangas: a rock, a stone vase or vessel and an engraved stone which reflect notions of peacekeeping. The rock represents Finnishness, safety & stability. The vase, or vessel, reflects introspection and inner thought that is so valuable to peacekeeping."

June 24, 1990 - "Silent Witness" Memorial, Gander Lake, Gander, Newfoundland (Canada). Memorizes 256 victims who died December 12, 1985, when Arrow Air Flight 1285 crashed while transporting Multinational Force Observers (MFO's) from the Sinai via Cairo to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky (USA). Depicts an unarmed soldier holding the hands of two civilian children, each with an olive branch of peace. Sculpted by Stephen Sheilds of Hopkinsville, Kentucky (USA).

October 2, 1990 - Peace Garden, Fresno State University, Fresno, California (USA). Created by Prof. Sudarshan Kapoor. Includes statues of Mahatma Gandhi (1990), Cesar Chavez (1996), Martin Luther King, Jr. (1998), & Jane Addams (2006). The Peace Garden was renovated in 2008 & rededicated on Earth Day 2009 as part of the new library project. Entry #65 in the "Peace Movement Directory" by James Richard Bennett (2001).

1990 - May 4 Memorial, Daffodil Hill, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio (USA). Memorializes the victims of the shooting on May 4, 1970, during the Viet-Nam War.

1990 - Peacemakers Monument, Federation of Peace and Conciliation, 36 Prospect Mira, Moscow (Russia). Commemorating the handshake between President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev on December 7, 1987.

1990 - Peace Garden, Riverfront Park, Susquehana River, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (USA). Placed by Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), an affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) which received the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. "Three statues by Dutch-born Dr. Frederick Franck [1909-2006] are especially notable: Hiroshima--The Unkillable Human, Death and Transfiguration, and Seven Generations (shown in image)." October 27, 1990 - Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Kapiolani Park, Honolulu, Hawaii, California (USA). Given to the city by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation, a non-profit organization run by Yogesh K. Gandhi.

November 9, 1990 - Breakthrough, Latshaw Plaza, adjacent to Winston Churchill Memorial, Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri (USA). By British-born artist Edwina Sandys. "Where Churchill first coined the historic phrase the 'Iron Curtain.' It has been called the most significant monument to be constructed on American soil since the Vietnam War Memorial. Created from eight massive sections of the Berlin Wall. Features male and female forms cut out from the wall’s concrete surface, symbolizing a passage through the wall to freedom."

November 1990 - World Wall for Peace (WWFP), Arbat ("12th century mall near the Kremlin"), Moscow (Russia). Over one city block long. See YouTube.

December 7, 1990 - Nagasaki Peace Bell, Honolulu Hale (City Hall), Honolulu, Hawaii (USA). Western style bell. Photo shows release of doves in mourning for loss of life due to the collision of the submarine USS Greenville with the Japanese fishing boat Ehime Maru on February 9, 2001.
