1882-1936 - Miekichi Suzuki - Novelist born in Hiroshima. Studied English literature. Ran a children's magazine called Akai Tori / Red Bird in 1918. Memorial opposite A-bomb dome.

1895-19?? - Dr. Masakazu Fujii - Hibakusha. Physician. His 30-room clinic toppled into the Kyo River when the bomb struck. One of 6 profiled by John Hersey (qv).
1895-2001 - Floyd Schmoe - Peace activist. Built houses in Hiroshima (1949-52) & Sadako Sasaki Peace Park in Seattle (1990). See Aki Kurose. P

1898-1964 - Leo Szilard - Atomic scientist. Drafted Einstein letter warning President Truman about German A-bomb in 1939. See Eugene Rabinowitch 1960
1898-1990 - Hugo Enomiya Lassalle - Missionary. Built Memorial Cathedral for World Peace in Hiroshima in 1954.

1899-1977 - Alice Franklin Bryant - Peace activist, world traveler, prolific writer & lecturer. Inturned in Phlipppines during WW-II.
1899-1988 - Masahiko Katori - Bellmaker & potter. Named a Living National Treasure of Japan in 1977. Made peace bells for Hiroshima, San Diego, Vancouver, etc.

1900

1901-1973 - Eugene Rabinowitch - Biophysicist. Urged 6/45 that US not use atomic bomb (Franck Report). Founded Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. See Leo Szilard.
1901-1995 - Iri Maruki - Made enormous paintings 1950-1982 of atomic bombing in Hiroshima with his wife Toshi Maruki (qv). Gallery in Saitama Prefecture (1967).

1902-1988 - Edita Toll Morris - Peace activist. Wrote "The Flowers of Hiroshima" in 1959. Created Hiroshima Foundation
1902-1999 - Tomin Harada - Medical doctor & peace activist. Led the "Hiroshima Maidens" to USA in 1955.

1903-1980 - Michihiko Hachiya - Doctor. Habakusha. Kept diary August 6-September 30 which was published in 1955 as "Hiroshima Diary." Staff & patients at his hospital call the atomic bomb pikadon.

1904-1961 - Marcel Junod - Field delegate of International Committee of the Red Cross. See monument in Hiroshima.
1904-1988 - Isamu Noguchi - Artist & landscape architect. Designed Japanese Garden at UNESCO Hq in Paris & bridge in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

1905-1968 - Shinzo Hamai - Mayor of Hiroshima 1947-1955 & 1959-1967. Created Hiroshima's image as a City of Peace.

1907-1977 - Wilhelm Kleinsorge - Jesuit priest in Hiroshima. Comforted the dying & wounded even as he fell prey to radiation sickness. One of 6 profiled by John Hersey (qv).

1908-1951 - Takashi Nagai - Doctor & writer. Survivor of the Nagasaki A-bomb. "Saint of Urakami."
1908-2005 - Joseph Rotblat - Manhattan Project scientist. SecGen of Pugwash Confs 1957-1973. See video. 1992 P 1995

1909-1955 - James Agee - Wrote 1st Time essay on Hiroshima ("brilliantly rendered splitting of the American conscience no less than the atom") & "Dedication Day" ("the fiction most directly related to Hiroshima").
1909-1986 - Kiyoshi Tanimoto - Methodist pastor. Hibakusha. Emory College (Atlanta) 1940. Raised money in USA for a peace center. One of 6 profiled by John Hersey (qv).

1910

1910-1998 - Earle Reynolds - Physical anthropologist. Husband of Barbard Leonard Reynolds (qv). Constructed the "Phoenix of Hiroshima."

1911-19?? - Hatsuyo Nakamura - Hibakusha. A tailor’s widow raising three young children on her own One of 6 profiled by John Hersey (qv).

1912-2000 - Toshi Maruki - Made enormous paintings 1950-1982 of atomic bombing in Hiroshima with her husband Iri Maruki (qv). Gallery in Saitama Prefecture(1967).

1913-2005 - Kenzo Tange - Architect. Awarded first prize for design of Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. Received the Pritzker Architcture Prize in 1987.

1914-1993 - John Hersey - Journalist. Born in China. Used fiction techniques. Wrote entire issue of The New Yorker about Hiroshima - adjudged best piece of US journalism in 20th century.

1915-1990 - Norman Cousins - "Tireless advocate of liberal causes." Subject of 1st US monument in Hiroshima in 2003. 1990
1915-1990 - Barbara Leonard Reynolds - Founded WFC in Hiroshima & PRC in Wilmington, Ohio. Subject of 2nd US monument in Hiroshima in 2011.
1915-2005 - Philip Morrison - Professor of physics. One of the very few Manhattan Project scientists to visit Japan & observe effects of the bomb. He said he was a "crime & a sin."
1915-2006 - Alvin Weinberg - Manhattan Project physicist. Proposed "Sanctification of Hiroshima" in 1985. Click here for Wikipedia bio.

1916-1994 - Takeshi Araki - Mayor of Hiroshima 1975-1991. Founded Mayors for Peace in 1982.
1916-2010 - Tsutomu Yamaguchi - Businessman. One of at least 160 people who survived BOTH A-bombs, but only one officially recognized by the government of Japan.

1918-1994 - Oka Masaharu - Protestant minister. Helped Korean A-bomb victims. Oka Masaharu Memorial Peace Museum in 1995.

1919-1997 - Joe Kieyoomia - Navajo Indian & soldier in NM's 200th Coast Artillery. Captured in the Philippines. POW in Nagasaki. Survived BOTH Bataan death march AND the A-bomb.

1920

c1920-19?? - Tadayoshi Saika - Prof of English Literature, Hiroshima Univ. Composed epitaph on Hiroshima cenotaph: "Let all the souls here rest in peace for we shall not repeat the evil."
1920-19?? - Dr. Terufumi Sasaki - Hibakusha. Surgeon at Red Cross Hospital. One of 6 profiled by John Hersey (qv).
1920-2005 - Pope John Paul II - See monument commemorating his Appeal for Peace in Peace Memorial Museum.
1920-2008 - John D. Montgomery - Advised Hiroshima Reconstruction Planning Commission in May 1946. Became prof of public admin at Harvard. Served in over 80 countries.

1922-2007 - Kurt Vonnegut - Wrote "Cat's Cradle" (1963) - probably the only widely read novel overtly relating to Hiroshima. He said, "I want scientists to be more moral."
1922-2014 - Hitoshi Motoshima - Mayor of Nagasaki 1979-95. Said Emperor Hirohito bore some responsibility for WW-II & Japan deserved atomic bombings.

1923-2009 - Ed Grothus - Machinist. Protested US atomic bombs. See monuments in Los Alamos, New Mexico (USA).

c1925-19?? - Toshiko Sasaki - Hibakusha. A young clerk who worked in a tin works factory. One of 6 profiled by John Hersey (qv).
1925-1998 - Aki Kurose - Japanese-American educator in Seattle. Pacifist & peace activist, Inturned during WW-II. See Floyd Schmoe. P

1926-Alive - Robert Jay Lifton - Psychiatrist & author. Wrote "Death in Life: Survivors of Hiroshima" (1967) & "Hiroshima in America: Fifty Years of Denial" (1995).

1927-Alive - Takashi Hiraoka - Mayor of Hiroshima 1991-1999. Hosted 1994 Asian Games. Testified at World Court in 1995 about nuclear weapons.

1930

1931-Alive - Martin Harwit - Astronomer. Headed National Air & Space Museum but forced to resign in 1995 over proposed display of Hiroshima bomber Enola Gay.
1931-Alive - Shigeko Yoshino Uppuluri - Born in Kyoto. Lived in Shanghai 1936-45. Worked to acquire International Friendship Bell in Oak Ridge (USA).

1936-19?? - Toshio Nakamura - Hibakusha. Son of Hatsuyo Nakamura (profiled by John Hersey). Had terrible dreams following the A-Bomb death of friend.

1940

1942-Alive - Tadatoshi Akiba - Mayor of Hiroshima 1999-2011. President of Mayors for Peace. 2012

1943-1955 - Sadako Sasaki - Hiroshima victim. Attempted to fold 1,000 origami cranes before her death at age 12.

1944-Alive - Koko Kondo - Hibakusha. Daughter of Kiyoshi Tanimoto (qv). In 1955, both appeared on "This Is Your Life." Attended American Univ. Lived with Nobel laureate Pearl S. Buck.
1944-Alive - Jessica Reynolds Shaver Renshaw - Author. Lived in Hiroshima. Sailed w/parents Earle & Barbara Reynolds (qv) into atomic test area in 1958.

1945-2007 - Iccho Itoh - Mayor of Nagasaki from 1995. Testified at World Court against nuclear weapons. Killed by a senior member of Yamaguchi-gumi, an organized crime group.

1949-Alive - Don Plusquellic - Mayor of Akron, Ohio. Past prest of US Conf of Mayors. Sponsored resolution "Calling for Constructive Good Faith US. Participation in Intl Nuclear Disarmament Forums."

1950

1950-Alive - Richard Branson - Controls Virgin Group of >400 companies. Sent "Reconciliation" by Josefina de Vasconcellos to Belfast, Berlin, Coventry & Hiroshima.

1953-Alive - Kazumi Matsui - Mayor of Hiroshima since 2011. President of Mayors for Peace.

1960

c1960-Alive - Olivia Fermi - "Counselor, coach & consultant" based in Vancouver, BC. Granddaughter of , Enrico Fermi [1901-1954] & Laura Fermi [1907-1977]. Founded The Neutron Trail.

c1960-Alive - Steve Leeper - Chair of Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation. From Atlanta, Gerorgia (USA).
